Mikel Arteta provides injury update on David Luiz ahead of Villarreal Europa League clash

Mikel Arteta has provided the latest on David Luiz's injury after the Brazilian was forced off during Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

The 34-year-old was making his come back to the side after having surgery on a knee problem that kept him out for the entirety of April and was having a good game, with his pass proving key in the build up to Mohamed Elneny 's opener.

However, early in the second half Luiz went down after minimal contact holding what appeared to be his left hamstring before being immediately replaced by Calum Chambers.

And now Mikel Arteta has provided the latest on how serious the problem is for the experienced former Chelsea centre half.

"We don’t know," said the Spaniard when asked if this injury could spell the end of the Brazilian's season.

"He felt something in his hamstring so it’s not good news.

"He’s put such a shift to be back with the team for the last few weeks after the knee surgery and it’s a real shame."

Far from just proving to be the end of his campaign the injury could well bring Luiz's Arsenal career to a premature end. His contract is set to expire in the summer with talks over an extention not set to take place until the end of the season.

It's a real blow for the Gunners who looked far more composed at the back than in recent weeks for having the experienced Brazilian back in their defensive line.

While the extent of the injury is currently unknown, it is likely to at least keep him out of the second leg of Arsenal's Europa League semi final against Villarreal on Thursday.

The Gunners were also hoping to have Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette back for part two of their reunion with Unai Emery, but speaking after the win at Newcastle, Arteta revealed the chances of that happening were very slim.

"Well they haven’t trained with the team yet so I think that’s unlikely to happen," he said of the duo's chances.
