Mikel Arteta provides fitness updates on two key Arsenal players ahead of Chelsea clash

Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of Gabriel Martinelli and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of Arsenal's clash with Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Gabon striker has missed the Gunners last two matches against Everton and Manchester City due to a calf injury sustained in training.

Martinelli on the other hand made his first start for Arsenal in nine months during the Carabao Cup loss to Pep Guardiola's men, but was withdrawn early into the second half after a clash with Zack Steffen.

Speaking to the press ahead of Saturday's London Derby with the Blues, Arteta was able to reveal the latest on both players' fitness.

"Responding to both questions we don't know," he said when asked about the condition of the two forwards.

"We have to see in the next 48 hours how they evolve. I'm sure that they both are going to be very keen to come and help the team.

"But we will see if they are available to come and do that or not."

This builds on from the latest team news that Arsenal provided on their official website.

On Aubameyang the Gunners said: "Auba is working hard with our medical team in order to regain full fitness as soon as possible. Has now joined outside drills and will continue to be assessed regarding availability ahead of Saturday."

They then added on Martinelli: "Gabi is recovering well and we hope he will be able to participate in full training ahead of Saturday."

The club will definitely have Granit Xhaka available though, after the Swiss midfielder completed his three match suspension following his straight red card against Burnley

Mikel Arteta will want both forwards available to him ahead of what is a vital fixture for his side.

Arsenal sit 15th in the league with just 12 goals in the 14 Premier League matches, and are at genuine risk of being dragged into a relegation battle if they do not start picking up points soon.
