Mikel Arteta prepares Arsenal shake-up after Aaron Ramsdale 'tells friends' change is coming
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could hand Aaron Ramsdale his Premier League debut for the club as they look to kick-start their campaign.
The Gunners face Norwich City this weekend looking to bounce back from three consecutive defeats to start the season.
In what appears a more winnable game on paper, the Spaniard could ring the changes to ensure they can get points on the board.
One position which remains in question is in between the sticks, particularly after Bernd Leno shipped nine goals in three games.
Ramsdale signed from Sheffield United for £24million during the summer window, with the hope of eventually usurping Leno in the Arsenal goal.
While Leno has been busy picking balls out of his net, his back-up registered a clean sheet on his Gunners debut, as they beat West Brom 6-0 at The Hawthorns.
He was then given another chance to impress during a behind-closed-doors friendly with Brentford and registered another shutout during the 4-0 win.
"I think it was a really strong debut," Arteta said of Ramsdale’s first appearance in an Arsenal shirt. "You can see his personality, he’s comfortable on the ball and I’m really glad for him.
"I’m really happy with him. He hasn’t trained a lot with us, but you can see the qualities he has. He’s a really young goalkeeper – he’s done a lot already in the league and you can see the presence and the personality he has when he plays."
The Sun reported earlier this week that Ramsdale has told friends that he expects to get the nod against the Canaries.
Swiftly switching to Ramsdale would also help back up Arteta’s determination to sign the 23-year-old.
According to the Athletic, Arsenal transfer bosses believed there were cheaper alternatives to Ramsdale, but Arteta was adamant that his top target was the best choice.
Leno’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Football.London suggest Arsenal could get a glimpse of the future sooner rather than later.
The Gunners also look set to be able to welcome Ben White, Thomas Partey and Gabriel into the starting XI against Norwich.
Club record signing White missed the defeats to Chelsea and Man City after contracting Covid-19, while Partey and Gabriel are yet to play this season having suffered injuries during the summer.
Emile Smith-Rowe is a doubt however after missing England Under-21’s midweek clash with Kosovo with a bout of illness.
