Mikel Arteta pinpoints what cost Arsenal in disappointing Aston Villa defeat

Mikel Arteta saw his Arsenal side fall to defeat at Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

And the Spaniard insisted that his side’s exploits against Liverpool and Manchester City had worked against his side at Villa Park.

The Gunners arrived in the West Midlands buoyed by their results in the previous six days, defeating Premier League champions Liverpool before booking an FA Cup Final place with a 2-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley.

But they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Dean Smith’s relegation-threatened side.

Egyptian international Trezeguet scored the only goal of the night to move the Villans out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Smith’s men were good for their victory, with Arsenal producing a lacklustre display, struggling to break down a stubborn home defence while offering up chances themselves at the other end.

Speaking post-game Arteta said: "Villa gave absolutely everything and perhaps we lacked a little bit of freshness.

"Congratulations to Villa because they were put under a lot of pressure and they managed to win the game.

"We were in some really good positions but we didn't manage to deliver the ball.

"Emotionally and physically it's been a very demanding week but I saw a team who wanted to fight until the end.

"I'm not disappointed about the attitude - I know where we are in certain areas and where we need to improve more. We will get that."

The result means Arsenal will finish below Spurs, with eighth the highest that the Gunners can now finish.

It will be the first time in 25 years that they will finish outside the top six and means that only FA Cup victory against Chelsea next week will see them qualify for Europe next season.
