Mikel Arteta opens up on his decision to turn down Newcastle United

Mikel Arteta has confirmed he was approached by Newcastle United in the summer and has spoken of why he turned down the opportunity to succeed Rafa Benitez.

The former Arsenal and Everton midfielder was one of Pep Guardiola's most trusted coaches at Manchester City when the Magpies made their approach.

Arteta was understood to be one of the favourites to take the vacant post at St James' Park, but decided against leaving the Premier League champions in the summer.

The 37-year-old took his first managerial role at Arsenal in November, and is now preparing to face United in their televised clash on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to the Mail Online ahead of the visit of Steve Bruce's side, Arteta revealed it was a difficult decision to decline the Magpies' offer.

He said: 'I was considering a situation that could change my professional and personal life.

"I had to put everything on the table to make that decision. I made the decision to stay."

Months later, Arteta was lured away from the Etihad Stadium to take the managerial post at Arsenal following Unai Emery's sacking.

The former Gunners' captain spent five seasons in north London, and admits it was almost impossible to reject the offer.

Arteta said: "When something touches your heart in that moment it's very difficult to say no.

"Obviously this is a very special place for me."

Bruce was appointed as Benitez's successor on Tyneside, and following a difficult start has guided the Magpies to 12th in the table and the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Arteta praised the work of the former Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland boss ahead of their upcoming meeting, and believes Newcastle are "happy" with their appointment and the season so far.

The Gunners' boss added: "I believe Newcastle are happy. What Steve has brought to the club has been really, really good.

"The performances and results, compared to where they were last year, they are above any expectation.

"He has put together a team with great spirit and is a manager with massive, massive experience.'
