Mikel Arteta may have discovered Arsenal and England's next Bukayo Saka after transfer decision

Arsenal don't have too many representatives in the England squad at this summer's European Championships.

In fact, it's just the one player with teenager Bukayo Saka making Gareth Southgate's final 26-man party as the Three Lions look to win a major tournament for the first time since 1966.

With that said, in the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson, Miguel Azeez and Charlie Patino, Arsenal do have a pool of players that can represent England in future tournaments.

But it's Joe Willock who could be the favourite to follow in Saka's footsteps and become the next Gunners player to feature for the Three Lions at a major tournament.

Well, that's the view of England legend Terry Butcher when asked if Willock was unlucky not to make the Euro 2020 squad after finishing the season in fine form for Newcastle United.

"He’s pretty young, he’s done ever so well but it’s a major step up when it comes to England," Butcher said when speaking exclusively to PlayOJO. "It’s the level of training – there’s a big jump from a 21-year-old in the Premier League to international football.

"I think Gareth would have looked at it and said he’s worth looking at but maybe for next season."

A good 2021/22 season for Willock could put him in contention to be named in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup which is being played in the winter so there's more than enough time to impress Southgate.

Although, it remains to be seen where the midfielder will be playing his football.

Following Mikel Arteta's decision to loan out Willock to Newcastle during the January transfer window, the 21-year-old proved he is Premier League quality.

He netted eight goals in 14 appearances, seven of which were in succession as he equalled a record set by Magpies legend Alan Shearer.

As a result, Newcastle are interested in signing Willock permanently this summer, although, following Arsenal's failure to sign Emi Buendia, there could be a new role for him under Arteta next season.

Whatever happens, the Spaniard's decision in January has pushed Arsenal closer to having another academy graduate representing England at a major tournament.
