Mikel Arteta issues honest verdict on Arsenal's top six hopes as Granit Xhaka opens up on error

Here are your Arsenal morning headlines for Sunday, March 7.

Arteta delivers verdict on top six hopes

Mikel Arteta has delivered his verdict on Arsenal's top six hopes after the draw with Burnley.

The draw leaves the Gunners seven points off sixth place despite having played a game more, but 'anything can happen,' Arteta has warned.

"Really complicated at the moment," he said after Arsenal's latest draw when asked about his side's European qualification hopes. "It’s true the feeling that I have the way we are playing that we can win any game.

"But as well as you mentioned before if you are giving something to the opponent obviously the game is all the time in the line.

"This in my opinion is where we have the biggest margin for improvement. But anything can happen."

Xhaka apologises

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has broken his silence after his mistake against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

During the Gunners' 1-1 draw with Burnley, Xhaka attempted to clear the ball from inside his own box, only to cannon the ball against Chris Wood's hip and into the net.

There was little keeper Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal could do as the ball bounced straight into the net from relatively close range, and plenty of criticism has followed following Xhaka's mistake.

But the Swiss midfielder is not running away from his mistake, fronting up to the error on Instagram after the game.

He wrote: "I hold my hands up for their goal and I’m sorry for the mistake. That’s football and right now I feel just as frustrated as all of you.”

Walton speaks out on handball incident

It was another game and another controversial VAR decision that has affected Arsenal.

The latest of which came in their 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday afternoon as Nicolas Pepe felt he should have won a penalty for the Gunners when the ball hit Erik Pieters on the arm.

This incident occurred inside the final 15 minutes at Turf Moor and was not spotted by referee Andre Marriner in real-time, thus VAR reviewed the decision whilst the action continued.

But after a quick check, it was decided that Arsenal should not have been awarded a penalty - much to the surprise of Pepe and his teammates.

Meanwhile, former referee Peter Walton was also surprised that the Gunners were not afforded a chance to retake the lead from the spot.

"I am slightly surprised actually that it wasn't given as a penalty kick, but I can understand the rationale behind it," Walton said on BT Sport."

"It's hit Pieters' hand, his arm is out and in a natural position for his stance of play.

"However, we have seen those given this season and the law doesn't change until next season.

"I'm a bit surprised that wasn't given."
