Mikel Arteta indicates plans for new Arsenal coaching staff amid Freddie Ljungberg links

Mikel Arteta says he will discuss reshaping his coaching staff at the end of the season after having little time in which to build a backroom team at Arsenal.

After his unveiling as the new Gunners' boss on December 20 Arteta had little time to put together a backroom team, announcing four days later that he had appointed Steve Round, Albert Stuivenberg and Freddie Ljungberg as his three assistant coaches with Inaki Cana joining from Brentford as the Gunners' goalkeeping coach.

In recent months it has been suggested that Arteta could look to hone his staff with speculation that former Arsenal and Villarreal playmaker Santi Cazorla could join before he agreed to extend his playing career with Al Sadd in Qatar. The legendary Dennis Bergkamp has also indicated he could be tempted to join the London Colney coaching staff.

In an interview with Russian publication Okko Sports, Arteta reportedly confirmed that he would be looking to make changes to his setup, something which he appeared to confirm would at least be considered in his press conference ahead of the FA Cup Final.

"At the end of the season, we will talk about it," Arteta said.

Meanwhile assistant Freddie Ljungberg has been linked with a move to management with Swedish giants AIK but sources close to the club have told football.london that the 43-year-old is not currently on their shortlist.

Ljungberg was the only member of Unai Emery's coaching staff to be retained by Arsenal and was tasked with working as caretaker manager after the Spaniard's sacking in November.

A member of the club's 2002 and 2004 title-winning sides, the 43-year-old takes a watching brief from the stands during games, relaying his view to Arteta for the half-time team talks.

The Swede, who was Under-23 head coach in 2018/19, also functions as a key part of Arsenal's transition team alongside academy chief Per Mertesacker, loan manager Ben Knapper and technical director Edu.

Ljungberg is greatly valued across the club and there are many who would be reluctant to lose him. His role in helping settle the crop of youngsters who have been among Arsenal's most effective performers this season is much appreciated and the likes of Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe have not stinted in praising his influence.
