Mikel Arteta identifies the two things Eddie Nketiah does that impress him the most

Eddie Nketiah's third goal since returning to Arsenal might have carried the day for the Gunners in the FA Cup fifth round but it was his defensive work rather than scoring exploits that won him as much praise from his head coach Mikel Arteta.

Nketiah scored his side's second goal in Monday night's 2-0 win over League One Portsmouth with the sort of poacher's finish that is fast becoming his trademark, beating both centre-backs to Reiss Nelson's cross into the box and lofting the ball over goalkeeper Alex Bass with his second touch.

It had not always been so certain that Nketiah would get his shot at Arsenal this season but Arteta was so impressed with the 20-year-old's application in training after he was recalled from Leeds United that he opted to keep hold of the striker rather than allow him to go on loan to another Championship club.

Arteta remains as impressed now as he was in January.

Jens Lehmann explains Arsenal's 'mediocre' results

"He has been phenomenal," he said.

"The workrate that he puts in, the rhythm that he goes into pressing, his understanding of the game - when to come and when to go in behind - and always in front of goal, he is ready to score."

Nketiah was also at pains to note that there was more to his game than just goalscoring, which could be considered a comment aimed at Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, who preferred Patrick Bamford because he felt the former Chelsea striker offered greater contributions to his side's build-up play.

Nketiah certainly showed further feathers to his bow on Monday as he completed two tackles, as many as any team-mate bar Gabriel Martinelli, and made two key passes, a tally only bettered by Nelson.

"For me it's not just about the goals, it's about my overall play and I was happy with my performance today," Nketiah said. "Pressing and working hard, that's what it's about.

"It's great to play with such good team-mates who are always encouraging and pushing us on. We want to keep this momentum going and try to build a bit of a run going."
