Mikel Arteta has selected his Mesut Ozil replacement but Arsenal face transfer struggle

Arsenal are looking to make late moves in the transfer market to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the season.

The Gunners' January window has so far been dominated by departures, with Sead Kolasinac, Mesut Ozil and Sokratis departing.

However, Mikel Arteta has his eyes on new additions this month and will utilise the loan market to find a creative midfielder to fill a void that has become clear this season.

Emi Buendia has been a prime target but Norwich City have made it clear the Argentine will not be leaving this month, leading to Arsenal looking elsewhere.

Mikel Arteta on Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka's influence

Sky Sports report that Arteta has found his man, with Arsenal said to have made an approach to Real Madrid to sign midfielder Martin Odegaard.

The 22-year-old shone last season on loan at Real Sociedad but has struggled to earn regular opportunities this term since returning to the Spanish capital, featuring in just five minutes of football since the start of December.

Reports from Spain yesterday indicated that the Denmark international had requested to leave this month, which raised the possibility of an Arsenal move.

However, the Gunners face a challenge to get a deal over the line as Spanish journalist Kike Marin has named Sociedad as the favourites to secure his services, with discussions at an 'advanced stage'.

Crucially, it's indicated the talented midfielder prefers a move to the Basque county - which could be decisive in the hunt for his signature.

Arsenal do have an easy line of communication with Zinedine Zidane's side though, with Dani Ceballos spending the season on loan at the Emirates Stadium.
