Mikel Arteta has discovered a new problem to solve at Arsenal after Wolves defeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has a new problem to solve following a 2-1 defeat against Wolves.

It is now nine red cards for the Gunners since the Spaniard was appointed head coach/manager in December 2019 after David Luiz and Bernd Leno were given their marching orders on Tuesday evening.

Whilst former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand had some sympathy with Luiz, he admitted there was no excuses for Leno who handled the ball outside his area.

"People are still clambering for more changes, and more rule changes, that are going to confuse the fans at home, the people sitting on their sofas watching and the players even more," Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

"So, we tried to go through it with Peter Walton in here, I’m still quite confused about it. What we've learned is that you’re better off going in there and just smashing the striker and you’ll probably get a booking.

"But Leno, there’s zero excuses for him, he’s misjudged the bounce of the ball and from there, it’s just comedy."

Hoddle agreed with his BT Sport colleague regarding Leno, but also pointed out that Arsenal should have been more clinical inside the opening 30 minutes.

"He was in two minds of some sort. What was going through his mind, I don’t think anyone will know," Hoddle added. "He’s got to play safe, he’s the last, last man - he always is as a goalkeeper.

"Head it out, knock it out with your chest, do something.

"It was disastrous for Arsenal because they should’ve wrapped up the game in the first half an hour."

Bukayo Saka had an effort ruled out following a VAR decision, hit the post inside the opening minute, and may have done better with Emile Smith Rowe's cross in the first-half.

Scoring goals has been an issue for the Gunners this season with just 27 to their name in the Premier League, so as well as solving his side's disciplinary record, Arteta has to find a way for his team to be more ruthless.
