Mikel Arteta has decided Arsenal's next move after £20m Emiliano Martinez transfer

Mikel Arteta has broken his silence on Arsenal's search for a new goalkeeper.

This week marked the departure of second-choice stopper Emiliano Martinez who has joined fellow Premier League side Aston Villa in a deal worth a reported £20m.

With the 28-year-old now gone, a spot has opened up to become Bernd Leno's understudy and plans are in place to fill the void.

According to The Telegraph, the Gunners are interested in signing Runar Alex Runarsson as a replacement for Martinez and the report states they have opened talks with Dijon over a deal.

Meanwhile, they continue to be linked with a move for Brentford's David Raya.

Speaking ahead of his side's clash against West Ham United, Arteta delivered an update on the search for Martinez's replacement and his hopeful of making an announcement soon.

"With the departure of Emi, which is a big loss - some that we wish the best [for] for what he’s done to the football club and for the person he is - we have to replace him," the Spaniard said.

"We've been looking in the market and I think we will be sure to announce our new signing in that position.

"In football, the hours can become days and something that looks unlucky can happen straight away so I cannot tell you.

"Depending on what’s going to happen with our third goalkeeping position. We had some talks about that in the last few months.

"Still, the market is still open but things can change."

According to The Beautiful Game Podcast, Raya has made it clear to Brentford manager Tomas Frank that he wants to leave the club and become the Gunners' next major summer signing.

However, a deal for the goalkeeper could be complicated as a fee between the two clubs has not been agreed.

The Telegraph reports that Brentford have knocked back a £10million bid for Raya, but it is understood they would be more open to selling the 25-year-old and then taking him back on loan for the season.
