Mikel Arteta has answer to Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus transfer question right under his nose

Since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Barcelona in February, Arsenal's need for a new striker has dominated the headlines.

But do they actually need one? Eddie Nketiah has taken his chance at the Emirates, scoring four goals in as many Premier League games to confine captain Alexandre Lacazette to the bench. It's been a while since a Gunners striker has boasted that form.

Arsenal have been linked with plenty of forwards in recent times, the most of recent of which being Gabriel Jesus. His agent Marcelo Pettinati has confirmed they've held talks with the Gunners and "like the project" manager Mikel Arteta is leading.

In many ways, the move would make sense. Manchester City have just announced the signing of Erling Haaland - pushing him down the pecking order - and the Brazilian worked with Arteta at City during the Spaniard's time as Pep Guardiola's assistant.

Jesus could also join his compatriots Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli at the Emirates, as well as technical director Edu. His 54 senior caps, Olympic Gold medal and 2019 Copa America title will certainly impress the administrator.

Yet the City ace is hardly the prolific striker Arsenal need. The 25-year-old has only reached double figures in the Premier League scoring charts twice since moving to the Etihad in January 2017. He's found the back of the net 13 times in all competitions this term.

Should Arsenal sign Gabriel Jesus? Let us know in the comments below!

Those are decent figures for a regular Premier League striker, yet Jesus isn't playing in a regular team. He has some of the best players in Europe playing alongside him - such as Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva. His record isn't good enough to be the focal point of Arteta's attack next term.

It would be wise for Arsenal to sign a new striker considering they've only got Nketiah and Lacazette - who are both out of contract next month - on their books. And Jesus would be a good reserve if Arsenal can broker a thrifty deal with City.

Yet the Gunners should agree a new long-term deal with Nketiah and make him their first-choice striker before entertaining the idea of signing a new forward. On paper, his record isn't great - scoring 22 goals in 89 games since marking his debut in September 2017.

But the 22-year-old hasn't had many opportunities. He was forced to wait until April for his first Premier League start of the season and has only made 16 starts in the competition since making his debut five years ago. No wonder he's reluctant to sign a new deal.

Nketiah is now flourishing at the Emirates and is showing he can become a 20-goal-a-season striker if given the opportunity by Arteta. As Martin Keown wrote in his recent column for the Daily Mail, the youngster has "been a revelation over the last four wins".

Arsenal are keen to keep Nketiah on their books with other clubs interested. Yet they need to act sooner rather than later. The Lewisham lad deserves the chance to lead Arsenal's attack next season. It would be a risky move by Arteta - considering his lack of minutes - but it's one worth taking. Jesus will not fire them to the title, Nketiah might.
