Mikel Arteta has already revealed the one reason why Gabriel is unlikely to be Arsenal captain

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta may have already hinted why it would be unwise to make Gabriel Magalhaes the next captain.

The Gunners released a statement on Tuesday that confirmed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had been relieved of his captaincy duties following a disciplinary breach.

Aubameyang was left out of the matchday squad for Saturday's 3-0 win against Southampton and will also be absent for Wednesday night's clash against West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium.

Speculation has begun on who the next skipper should be and football.london understands that there are a number of candidates to take over from the Gabon international, including Martin Odegaard, Alexandre Lacazette, Benjamin White and Kieran Tierney.

However, a number of Arsenal supporters have urged Arteta to hand the armband to centre-half Gabriel Magalhaes, with the 23-year-old's leadership qualities clear to see throughout this campaign.

Arteta admitted back in October that he was pleased with Gabriel's partnership with Benjamin White in the centre of defence but did acknowledge that the Brazilian's grasp of the English language still isn't great.

“Yes, because they never played together, because Gabi is still struggling a little bit with the language, because they didn’t have any time to work together in pre-season either,” Arteta said

“But they’re getting a really good connection. Good chemistry. I think their qualities match and complement each other really, really well and I think both of them today were terrific."

Arsenal's dressing room is a multicultural one although being fluent in English could be the deciding factor that ultimately rules out Gabriel from consideration.
