Mikel Arteta handed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Willian dilemma after Arsenal announcement

Ally McCoist says Arsenal are acting morally wrong by announcing redundancies whilst going after big-money targets.

The Gunners yesterday revealed their intention to lay off 55 staff due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on finances.

Yet, at the same time, Arsenal are trying to convince Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign a new deal and are closing in on a move for Chelsea winger Willian on a free transfer.

The contrast between the Gunners letting staff go - including long-serving scout Francis Cagigao - whilst also trying to spend money on high-earning players does not sit right with McCoist.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Scotland striker said the decision to make staff redundant was an own goal for the Gunners.

He said: "Morally it’s a big own goal no matter how you look at it.

"I don’t think you can defend it, you really can’t – how can you?

"I think most Arsenal supporters will agree with that.

"It’s indefensible to think, for example, that scout who has been at Arsenal for what, 30 years? They are the fabric of the club, players come and go.

"Morally, I think it's an own goal.

"I understand the dilemma, particularly for Arteta.

"Things have started really well and he’ll want to strengthen his squad; he’s signing Willian and you’ve got to keep Aubameyang, I get that.

"But you tell me how that possibly can be morally right if you’re offering somebody another £100,000-a-week, when somebody who is maybe on £200-a-week is getting the sack."
