Mikel Arteta handed Pablo Mari injury boost as Arsenal give Mesut Ozil update

Arsenal have confirmed that Pablo Mari is aiming to return to full training in September after successful surgery on the ankle injury sustained against Manchester City in June.

The Spaniard was set to be a key part of Mikel Arteta's side as the only left-footed centre-back in the first team.

His injury, however, has seen Sead Kolasinac take his role in the side with varied success, most recently making a costly mistake in the north London derby to gift Tottenham their equaliser.

"Left ankle. Sustained significant sprain to ankle ligaments during Manchester City (a). Has had a successful procedure to the injury and is now in the early stages of his recovery. Aiming to return to full training in September," a statement read on the club's official website.

This follows the encouraging news that Bernd Leno is aiming to return to full training before the 2019/20 campaign ends this month.

At the time of his knee injury against Brighton, there were understandable fears about the severity of his clash with Neal Maupay, but as revealed by football.london , the injury wasn't as bad as first feared.

"We thought it was going to be a more significant injury," Mikel Arteta said on June 23.

"We don't know the extent of the injury still but we know at least the cruciate ligaments are not damaged, which was the biggest fear at the start. He was more positive and in less pain today so that's good news."

Aside from the news about Mari, there were no injuries sustained in the 2-1 defeat to Spurs. The club also confirmed that Mesut Ozil is being assessed ahead of Liverpool due to back soreness.

Arteta is due to hold his pre-match press conference to discuss the issues in more detail this afternoon [July 14].
