Mikel Arteta gives optimistic Gabriel Martinelli update ahead of Arsenal vs Everton

Mikel Arteta says Gabriel Martinelli is nearing a return to the Arsenal side but will not feature against Everton this weekend.

The Brazilian striker has not played for the Gunners since March after injuring his knee in training ahead of Project Restart back in June.

Martinelli, 19, had enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season up to that point, scoring 10 times in 26 appearances in all competitions.

But sadly his recovery is not quite where it needs to be to feature in Saturday's clash with the Toffees.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Goodison Park, Arteta said: "Gabriel Martinelli is very close to being available and fit to be part of us as well, which is great news."

The Arsenal boss is keen to have the youngster back in his ranks, though, and praised Martinelli's attitude.

"Gabi is pure enthusiasm, energy, belief, charisma and goals. And this is him," Arteta said in his press conference. "He's around the training ground and he's around our training sessions and the energy is different because he goes 100 miles per hour.

"He's got this passion and his way of playing and he is a threat.

"He's a player that we've been missing because he brings something special to the team.

"He's contagious with his attitude and I think it's going to be a big boost when we have him."

Arteta admitted Arsenal have a few injury doubts to face Everton, but would not divulge which of his star's were facing late fitness tests.

One player who will definitely be missing is defender Gabriel, after his red card in the midweek draw with Southampton.

When asked who would replace the centre-back, Arteta suggested his selection could come down to whoever is fit.

"Well let’s see who do we have available tomorrow," he added. "We will assess them today and decide who is the best player to go and try to beat Everton."
