Mikel Arteta gives honest response to questions on his Arsenal future

Mikel Arteta insists he would not still be at Arsenal if he did not think he can take the club forward.

The Gunners' boss is under increased pressure after their defeat to Villarreal on Thursday leaves them facing their first season without European competition since 1995/96.

A 0-0 draw at the Emirates saw Arsenal crash out 2-1 on aggregate to the team managed by Unai Emery - the man Arteta replaced in the hot seat 18 months ago.

Lifting the trophy looked the only remaining salvation in what has been a thoroughly disappointing campaign, and Arteta conceded his side have not done enough to convince fans they are moving in the right direction.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Arteta said: "We have to show that on the pitch. It's not about talking. We are hugely disappointed as we wanted to deliver something special to them after the difficult season that we had."

Asked whether he thought Arsenal had progressed under his leadership, he told reporters: "Obviously looking at everything now is going to be focused on that. I understand that and I leave it to you guys [to speculate]."

Arsenal's league form has been of particular concern this season, as they currently sit ninth in the table, five points adrift of Liverpool who occupy the last Europa League slot but have a game in hand.

More damning is the fact they have won just 14 of their 34 matches, losing almost just as many (13), while drawing seven.

Along the way there have been dismal defeats to the likes of Aston Villa, Burnley and Wolves, while at one stage Arsenal looked in serious threat of relegation.

Their early exit from the FA Cup in the fourth round to Southampton after Arteta fielded a weakened team was also difficult to stomach for the Gunners' fanbase.

Quizzed whether his job was now on the line, Arteta said: "I think everybody's job always is under scrutiny."

One reporter then asked if Arteta still had confidence in his ability to lift the players, to which he responded defiantly, "I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't."
