Mikel Arteta finds unlikely ally in former Tottenham midfielder ahead of North London Derby

Arsenal's board must keep faith in the long-term project that Mikel Arteta is overseeing at the club.

That's the verdict of an unlikely ally in the shape of ex-Tottenham man Jermaine Jenas.

Jenas, speaking on BBC 5Live's Friday Football Social, believes Arteta deserves more time in the post despite murmurings of discontent among a small section of the Gunners' fanbase.

The Spaniard is approaching his first anniversary as Arsenal boss and Jenas can see improvements in that time - but he says there is plenty still to do.

And he hopes that Arteta gets the time to implement his plans.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's North London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - a game set to be watched by 2,000 home fans - Jenas said: "It will be interesting to see if Arsenal have the patience to stick with Arteta and I hope they do.

"I think in terms of Mikel's ethos and philosophy and how he wants the club to be viewed and to be run, in my opinion he's taken them back to when Arsene Wenger was strong in terms of the mindset of the club.

"I say this in the lightest way, they're not a joke anymore.

"There was a point where Arsenal became a joke where they'd go away to big clubs and get beat.

"There was a feeling players were running the show. I feel he (Arteta) has steadied the ship.

"It's a time for patience now for the Arsenal board because I think they're on to something with him.

"But the reality is that his players aren't good enough. That's the bottom line right now.

"They aren't good enough to achieve what Arsenal have in the past.

"Last season they had so much success under Arteta. I felt like he was clearing out a lot of the old and bringing in some really good players.

"When they got that really good result at Old Trafford there was a lot of positive talk at that point but since then it's just fell apart.

"In the Europa League they're flying but they can't transfer that energy into the league."
