Mikel Arteta faces David Luiz decision as Joe Willock 'shocked' by deadline day transfer

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Thursday, January 4th.

David Luiz decision

David Luiz's latest red card has shown Mikel Arteta that he needs to move on from the defender at Arsenal, Kaya Kaynak writes.

The Brazilian was shown his third red card in his 18 month spell against Wolves, which turned the tie of the game and brought an end to the Gunners' unbeaten run.

Luiz's contract is due to expire at the end of the season and, with the decision to extend his deal raising eyebrows last year, Arteta needs to move forward and away from the defender.

Joe Willock 'shocked' by transfer

Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock has admitted he was 'shocked' by Steve Bruce's approach to get him to sign for Newcastle United.

The Hale End graduate is spending the remainder of the season on loan with the Magpies and spoke about the conversations he had with his temporary manager.

“I had a chat with Steve Bruce. First he approached it in a nice way. He asked how I was training and how I was and he approached it by being humorous, he made a few jokes, and I am a funny guy and love to have jokes. That was a starter.

“He talked about how he would use me, where he sees me in the team and he had a whole plan for me. I was shocked. That was the first time I have spoken to a manager and they have had a whole plan for me. He called me a few times and there were a lot of things that made me think this is the right club for me."

Bellerin frustrated with Arsenal

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has expressed his disappointment with the squad following the midweek defeat against Wolves.

"One hundred per cent [we've had too many red cards]. We've shown that when we're 11 against 11 on that pitch, it's completely different. We had complete control in the first half and we probably should have been 2-0 up by the end of it. We paid for those mistakes.

"I always say that teams are not beating us, we are losing against ourselves. It's for us to learn. Hopefully this will be the last time. We were on such a good run, great momentum, great confidence in the team. We just need to forget this step because situations like this are not going to happen very often. We'll go on to the next one."
