Mikel Arteta explains reasoning behind nine Arsenal changes as Pablo Mari makes debut

Arsenal defender Pablo Mari is in for his Gunners debut as Mikel Arteta rings the changes for Monday night's FA Cup trip to Portsmouth.

Mari arrived at the club from Flamengo on an initial loan deal in January, although he will join on a permanent deal in the summer.

The Spaniard - who used to be on the books at Manchester City , although never played a senior game for the club - has featured for the Gunners' under-23s side this season, but makes his senior debut alongside David Luiz at centre-back.

Sokratis and Bukayo Saka also start in defence, with Emiliano Martinez taking over from Bernd Leno in goal.

Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira are partnered together in the centre of midfield, with Arteta opting for youth in attacking areas.

The Gunners boss has picked Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock and Gabriel Martinelli behind centre-forward Eddie Nketiah, who will be bidding to continue his impressive run in the side.

The team shows nine changes from the side that lost to Olympiakos in the Europa League last Thursday, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Hector Bellerin all left at home by Arteta.

The Gunners boss says that those decisions came off the back of the extra-time played in the Olympiakos defeat, as he hopes for a repeat of the display that aw off Bournemouth in the last round.

“We had some issues physically after the game," Arteta told BT Sport.

" We had to adapt to that, the players I’ve selected did really well at Bournemouth and hopefully they can do the same tonight.”

Arsenal XI: Martinez; Sokratis, Luiz, Mari, Saka; Guendouzi, Torreira; Nelson, Willock, Martinelli; Nketiah.

Subs : Leno, Maitland-Niles, Holding, Xhaka, Ceballos , Pepe, Lacazette.
