Mikel Arteta explains one benefit to Arsenal squad of enforced break from football

Mikel Arteta believes his Arsenal squad will return united from their enforced break due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Spaniard was only in charge at the Emirates for three months before football across the world was put on hold.

The Gunners lie ninth in the Premier League but won their last three league games before the pandemic struck.

And Arteta told Football Focus: "I've been talking with the players individually, sometimes in units or with the whole squad.

"It's been really helpful to get to know them better; I've only been here three months so it's a good chance to get to know each other better.

"We have a a group with the fitness coach and they do some work together, its more motivating to have some banter with each other, it's not easy to train yourself in a flat.

"I'm using time to connect with the club better and to improve our relationship and make sure we are on the right path. I want to make sure everyone understands what I've been trying to do since I joined the club.

"The virus will decide when football comes back and all the measures and our response will dictate when, it could be in six weeks or six months.

"The absolute priority is to get the world back to what it was but hopefully in a better place and with some lessons learned."

Arteta was one of the first in football to be struck down by coronavirus and his illness effectively forced the Premier League to suspend the season.

And he added: "I feel really good, I'm completely recovered. It took 5-7 days to get through the virus then I passed it on to my missus and another person who lives with us, but we are absolutely fine.

"I have a lot of people, relatives and family, who are dealing with really complicated situations.

"It is something we are living together, it is a massive challenge and we have to protect ourselves as best we can."
