Mikel Arteta explains how "crucial" Arsenal goal will help Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Mikel Arteta believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s winner for Arsenal against Manchester United will get him firm back on the goal trail.

The Gunners captain had not scored in five Premier League games heading into the Old Trafford fixture, with his previous goal coming in the 3-0 win at Fulham on the opening day of the season.

Aubameyang's dry run led to criticism of the Gabonese striker, who signed a lucrative new contract with Arsenal last summer.

But the 31-year-old shrugged off his naysayers, saying: “We are not finding scoring goals easy at the moment. This happens in teams - I haven’t scored for a few games in the league, either.

“But we’re an experienced team, with experienced attacking players and we know we will turn this around. I’m not worried about that.”

Aubameyang followed up his rousing words by scoring the winner against United and Arsenal boss Arteta is confident his first league goal since early September will come as a huge boost.

“Every striker needs goals and in these moments we have to create more for Auba," Arteta said.

"He has scored the crucial goal and it is going to lift his confidence."

The Gunners' victory was their first at Old Trafford in 14 years and Arteta heaped praise on his side for their brave performance.

The arsenal boss added: “I wanted to generate belief and I asked them to be who we are as a team right now.

"I’m delighted because we played with a lot of courage and big personality.

"Individually you have to win the fights and step up to the occasion and the performance of every player today was top drawer."

Arsenal's win against United sees them rise to ninth in the Premier League table, while they welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates next weekend.
