Mikel Arteta explains his Matteo Guendouzi decision ahead of Arsenal's clash with Olympiacos

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has spoken out about his decision to leave Matteo Guendouzi out of the Gunners' squad to face Newcastle United at the weekend.

The 20-year-old was dropped from the squad for Sunday's 4-0 win over Newcastle United after Arteta had reportedly been less than impressed with his attitude to training.

However, he has been restored to the squad for the Europa League last 32 first leg clash with Olympiacos, with the Frenchman joining the rest of the Arsenal travelling party on the journey to Greece.

And Arteta has moved to explain why he chose to leave him out on Sunday, but has now included him for the European clash.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League last 32 first leg clash, he said: “I just do my selection in regard to how they train, play and behave.

“It was about the way we train.”

Arteta has not, however, confirmed whether or not Guendouzi will feature against Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium, although he has not ruled out rotating his side.

“We had a break of 15 days, we played just one game so tomorrow I will put the team that we think is the best," he said.

Guendouzi has featured 29 times for the Gunners so far this season, with his last appearance coming in Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor earlier this month.
