Mikel Arteta drops David Luiz hint ahead of Arsenal's Europa League clash with Villarreal

Mikel Arteta has hinted that David Luiz could be available for Arsenal's Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal on Thursday.

Brazilian international Luiz was forced off with a hamstring injury during the second half of the Gunners' 2-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend.

Luiz had only recently returned from a knee injury which he required minor surgery on, with the former Chelsea defender expected to be back in action sooner rather than later.

“No [there is no update],” said Arteta in his pre-match press conference.

“He was feeling better yesterday. Let’s see how he is today. We don’t know the extent of the injury yet."

Asked if Luiz could be available for tomorrow's game, Arteta said: “With David it’s always possible because he wants to be available.

"He’s made an incredible effort to be in the position that he’s in today and the fact that he played against Newcastle was already a big bonus.

"He had surgery on his knee so with David, you never know.”

Arteta made eight changes for Arsenal's league encounter at St James' Park, with Luiz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both making their returns from injury and illness respectively.

Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette also took part in full training ahead of Thursday's game, but Arteta refused to confirm or deny whether they could be involved in the game.

After the Europa League semi-final Arteta's side face Premier League matches against West Brom, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, before finishing the league campaign with a home game against Brighton on May 23.
