Mikel Arteta discusses Lucas Torreira loan recall amid Arsenal's struggles

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has suggested that a return for Lucas Torreira could be an option in January.

The midfielder is currently away on loan at Atletico Madrid.

Torreira opted to leave the Emirates in pursuit of more regular football following Thomas Partey's arrival.

The Uruguayan had slipped down the pecking order before his temporary exit

But with Arsenal struggling this term they may look to assess the state of their squad and bring the midfielder back to north London.

Arteta though remained tight lipped when asked about a possible Torreira return.

He said: "We have been dealing with that situation, but again, when the market opens and we have the possibility to bring players in and get players out, whatever we have to do, we will discuss it. I cannot comment on that."

Torreira has helped Atletico establish themselves as title contenders in Spain.

They sit level on points with Real Sociedad at the summit, but have two games in hand and could open up a six point gap.

Atletico do hold the option to buy Torreira at the end of the season which may add complications however.

And the player's father has previously been very outspoken regarding Arteta's handling of his son.

"Lucas is honest and wants to leave his soul on the pitch," he said.

"But that is defined by the coaches and for the current Arsenal manager he didn’t count.

"For a 24-year-old boy, recognised in Uruguay and around the world, the most necessary thing is to play."

Granit Xhaka has instead been a regular in the centre of midfield.

The Swiss star was sent-off at the weekend for violent conduct but Arteta has come out in defence and insisted that one mistake will not be held against him.
