Mikel Arteta delivers update on Arsenal duo as Gabriel Martinelli sends timely reminder

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Monday, May 3.

Arteta issues update on David Luiz

Arsenal fans were left bemused as they watched David Luiz limp out of action after just one game back since his return from knee surgery.

The Gunners cruised to a comfortable 2-0 away victory over Newcastle, but the win was bittersweet as Luiz looks set to miss out on Thursday's crunch tie at home to Villarreal.

Luiz was enjoying a strong performance up until the moment of what appeared to be a hamstring injury, playing an important pass in the build up to his side's first goal.

Arteta said "We don’t know," when asked whether the injury would spell the end of the Brazilian's season.

"He felt something in his hamstring so it’s not good news.

"He’s put such a shift to be back with the team for the last few weeks after the knee surgery and it’s a real shame."

Martinelli shines again

There were a number of positive performers in an Arsenal shirt at St James Park, but the 19-year-old Brazilian was a constant threat from the first minute.

The teenager gave Jacob Murphy all sorts of headaches, not allowing the Newcastle full-back a seconds rest.

The calls for manager Mikel Arteta to use Martinelli more often will only grow louder if he continues to display his talent like this.

Martinelli was involved with the majority of noteworthy action, notching a wonderful assist for Aubameyang's goal while also the victim of Fabian Schar's tackle that saw the Swiss international receive his marching orders from Mike Dean.

Arteta concedes crucial pair could miss Villarreal visit

It was a case of more bad news on the injury front for Mikel Arteta after he admitted he could be without both Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette for Thursday night's Europa League semi-final second leg at home to Villarreal.

The Scottish left-back has missed the last six league games with a knee injury, while Lacazette sustained a hamstring injury in the disappointing 1-1 home draw to Fulham a fortnight ago.

"They haven't trained with us yet," Arteta told Sky Sports ahead of the Newcastle match.

"So it's unlikely to have them ready in the next few games."

He continued: "We played 40 minutes [against Villarreal] with ten men, we had a crazy schedule with players who didn't recover. Last week we learned a lesson with Laca... we need fresh players as well."
