Mikel Arteta delivers honest verdict on William Saliba's future at Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has claimed that there is room for loanee William Saliba at the club.

Saliba was signed from French outfit Saint-Etienne back in the summer of 2019 before spending the 2019/20 campaign back on loan with Les Verts.

The talented centre-half then joined up with Arteta's side in the summer of 2020 but struggled to make an impression on the Spaniard, who eventually allowed the youngster to play for Ligue 1 side Nice for the second half of last term.

Eventually, Arsenal added English defender Ben White to the ranks over the summer, meaning Saliba was again sent on loan to France, joining Jorge Sampaoli's Marseille - where he has impressed during the opening months of the season.

The 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive display on Sunday night as Marseille held Paris Saint-Germain to a 0-0 draw, with Saliba making a spectacular last-ditch tackle on compatriot Kylian Mbappe to earn Les Olympiens a point against the current leader leaders.

Now, Arteta has admitted that both the club's loan manager Ben Knapper and technical director Edu are keeping a close eye on the Frenchman's development.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal's trip to Leicester City, the Spaniard said: "As a club we are always in touch.

"Edu and Ben were there to watch him and keep a close eye on the progress he’s making."

The former Manchester City assistant coach also claimed that there is room at the club for Saliba despite the impressive performances of White and Gabriel in the centre of defence.

"I think there is room", Arteta said. "It will depend on what happens with other players and that’s not a conversation to have now."
