Mikel Arteta delivers honest verdict on Premier League problem as Tottenham vs Arsenal postponed

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has admitted the integrity of this season's Premier League integrity has been damaged considering the number of cancellations.

The Gunners have had two league matches called off this term, with December's fixture against Wolves postponed before this weekend's north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur was controversially also allowed to be rescheduled following a request from Arsenal.

Announcing the postponement of the highly-anticipated clash, the Premier League said: “The decision is a result of a combination of Covid-19, existing and recent injuries and players on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

“All clubs are able to apply for a postponement if Covid-19 infections are a factor in their request.”

And Arteta has claimed that this season has been greatly hampered by the sheer number of cancellations, admitting that he has no idea when some teams will play their games in hand.

“We have already reached a point where postponing games is damaging the integrity of the Premier League", the Spaniard said.

“You talk about a team like Burnley that is behind by those numbers, it’s not the same level of competition, it’s not the same level of availability.

“I don’t know when they’re going to have to play those games.

“It changes things. It’s not the regulations we are used to. We are trying to adapt, everyone is trying to do their best, but it’s a big question mark.”

The Gunners will host Liverpool on Thursday night in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, with last week's first leg finishing 0-0, despite Granit Xhaka receiving an early red card for a challenge on Diogo Jota.
