Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he has resolved the Granit Xhaka situation.
Xhaka was sent off during Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Burnley in the Premier League, with Arteta admitting the incident was unacceptable but also covered for the actions of the Swiss midfielder, adding: "I think it is related into how much will and energy they put into the games but it is not an excuse. I am sure he will [admit fault]."
Significant sections of the fanbase have called for Xhaka to be permanently expelled from the first-team with the 28-year-old experiencing a chequered 2020 in terms of his form, discipline and relationship with supporters.
"Well, whatever happens internally I'm sorry but we cannot discuss," Arteta said in a press conference on Tuesday. "It's been resolved internally and that's all I can say.
"It has and he's not the only one. He's not the only player who has had rocky moments. His commitment with the team is maximum, we know he had a moment where he's lost it.
"I know the reason why and what I cannot do is throw everything away because he made a mistake.
"I'm here to protect the players and the way he approaches every training session and do things in the right way every time and the professional he is."
Arsenal are in dire straits when it comes to their Premier League form, now five without a win following the Burnley defeat and with an in-form Southampton next up.
Arteta will be desperate for his side to avoid another defeat on Tuesday night, but he won't be helped by Xhaka's absence, the midfielder now banned for three games.
The 28-year-old has featured regularly this season, making 10 Premier League appearances, but he might have a job on his hands to earn back Arteta's trust, even if the red card incident appears to be forgiven.
