Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal transfer talks and opens up on Sead Kolasinac to Schalke loan move

The January transfer window opens tomorrow.

And Arsenal are expected to be busy in the market.

The Gunners have just strung together back-to-back victories, but remain in the bottom half of the Premier League table, with manager Mikel Arteta keen to bolster his options and strengthen hi squad.

Much has been made of the young players in the last few games, with the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli putting the more senior players to shame with their performances.

Arteta has already been told by the board that he will have to offload players before he is able to make any new signings in January and there are plenty of rumours around players leaving.

Mikel Arteta hopes Chelsea win will be a turning point for Arsenal

One of those is Sead Kolasinac, the Bosnian full-back who has managed just one Premier League appearance this season - his appearances coming more in the Europa League.

Kolasinac has been linked with a move to Germany and Schalke, with Arteta quizzed on that transfer link during his pre-match press conference ahead of the game with west Brom this weekend.

Arteta said: "I cannot confirm anything yet. We are working on a couple of things. Obviously the window is going to bring a lot of news. Some are true some are not. Whenever we have something to say we will announce it."

And Arteta, while not directly relating to Kolasinac, did confirm transfer talks were taking place.

He added: "We have had some conversations around a few players and whether we can find some loans because the numbers we have in the squad at the moment are really big. But again, we cannot confirm anything at the moment."

The loan market may be the best market for Arteta to use next month.

"Well, we have a large squad," Arteta admitted. "We knew that. A lot of things that should have happened in the summer we could not accomplish them for different reasons. There are a lot of players that are going to go on loan. They are going to leave.

"And that’s the priority at the moment because we cannot sustain the numbers that we have in certain positions. We are looking to do that. And then we will see if we have the right opportunities in the positions that we need some more help we are working with the club to try to address them."
