Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal stance over John Stones transfer link

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has rubbished newspaper reports he wants to sign John Stones from Manchester City .

Arteta worked with Stones at the Etihad during his time as Pep Guardiola's No.2 before succeeding Unai Emery at the Emirates.

The new Gunners boss is keen to strengthen this month, but he insists Stones, while being a player he admires, is not on his radar.

"John is a player that I really like and I followed," he said. "I worked with him for many years and know him well.

"When I look at centre-backs he has many attributes that I like from one, but we’re not interested."

Stones has featured in only 10 Premier League games so far this season having suffered from niggling injuries and being out of favour.

He arrived at City in the summer of 2016 for £50million and played a key role in England's march to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.

Arteta, speaking ahead of Arsenal's Premier League clash against Sheffield United at the Emirates on Saturday, also confirmed the Gunners will be without top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the next three games after his dismissal for violent conduct against Crystal Palace was upheld.

"It’s been confirmed he will be suspended for three matches," said the Spaniard.

"It’s a big shame because we know his intentions but we have to accept it.

“He was very disappointed after the game. He’s been superb under me, working hard, scoring goals and he’s probably been our most important player.

“I hope we can play better and win the games. Players have to step up. It’s time to talk on the pitch and if they show they’re as good or better than him, they have a chance.”
