Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal deal for Runar Alex Runarsson is close as they chase second goalkeeper

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Arsenal are close to signing Runar Alex Runarsson from Dijon and they could yet swoop for another goalkeeper, amid interest in Brentford’s David Raya.

The Gunners are believed to have agreed a fee of around £1.5million with Dijon for Runarsson, who is keen to move to north London.

The Iceland international is set to sign a long-term contract with Arsenal after receiving a good reference from the club’s goalkeeping coach, Inaki Cana.

Runarsson’s arrival will help fill the void left by FA Cup hero Emi Martinez, who left Arsenal this week after 11 years of service to join Aston Villa for £20m.

“Obviously with the departure of Emi, which is a big loss and someone that we all wish the best, we have to replace him,” said Arteta.

“We’ve been looking in the market and we will shortly be in a position to announce our new signing.”
