Mikel Arteta can sign final piece of his Arsenal transfer plan after target 'agrees' exit

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was ridiculed after spending £150million - more than any Premier League manager in the summer transfer window.

But he's the one laughing after the recent sharp turnaround in the Gunners' form.

Arsenal are just six points off the top of the table after their new-look squad started to really gel and put some decent performances together.

Aaron Ramsdale has ousted Bernd Leno in goal, while Martin Odegaard, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all impressed.

But Arteta isn't done when it comes to rebuilding his squad, and a striker will likely be his next priority. Real Madrid outcast Luka Jovic has been linked with a move to the Emirates before, and it seems Arsenal could reignite their interest in January.

The Serbian forward was once regarded as one of the best young strikers in the world during his time in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, and when he moved to the Bernabeu it seemed the natural next step on his road to stardom.

But since moving to Spain, Jovic has failed to recapture his best form, and only managed two goals from 27 games across all competitions in his first season with Los Blancos.

A return to the Bundesliga on loan last season was an unsuccessful attempt by Madrid at recapturing his form, but he managed just four goals in 18 Bundesliga games.

Now, with just little under four years remaining on his contract, it appears he's willing to move on.

Spanish outlet Diario AS claims Jovic has agreed it would be best for him to depart the Bernabeu, opening the door for a move to Arsenal.

For Arteta, who will likely be on the hunt for a new centre-forward due to Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette both being out of contract at the end of the season, Jovic could be the perfect target.

Jovic is a striker who plays between the posts and stays central, and therefore won't restrict Arsenal's attacking prowess from the wings.

But the 23-year-old would also fit in with Arsenal's long-term transfer strategy stemming from the summer window.

Arteta focused on signing young players with potential to develop at the Emirates, but still have an immediate impact in the first-team.

And Jovic fits the bill perfectly in that case, considering he's only 23 years of age.

Arsenal have enjoyed success this season when playing with wide attackers, with Bukayo Saka, Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe all alternating on the wings.

But Arteta needs a focal point between the posts to act as his main outlet for goals, and if he were to play Jovic in a similar style to how Frankfurt did, they could have a long-term option up top.

However, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti remains unwilling to let him go, and recently claimed: "I think Jovic is fine, happy to be here," Ancelotti said on Jovic earlier in the week. "I try to give him all the love possible.

“He is a player that I like as a striker. He knows it. He has the best striker in the world in front of him in Benzema. He should have faith that he is going to have his opportunity and that he can recover well.”

Despite Ancelotti's kind words, there's only so long Jovic can remain sat behind Karim Benzema in the pecking order at the Bernabeu, and a move to Arsenal could finally kick-start his career.
