Mikel Arteta can end Arsenal 'frustration' with January transfer for Erling Haaland's friend

Arsenal's toothlessness in attack was their for all to see again on Monday night as they threw away a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to Everton at Goodison Park.

The Gunners went 1-0 up through Martin Odegaard in the first half but never looked like pulling further away from the Toffees, even after VAR had ruled out two Richarlison goals for offside.

The Brazilian eventually found the target, however, and Demarai Gray's injury time rocket condemned Arsenal to their second successive defeat within the space of a week.

It was an attacking display best summed up by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's last-gasp effort, which was so devoid of conviction it barely crept off the edge of the pitch on its way wide.

"Well very frustrating, because when you are 1-0 up away from home... we should have done much better," Mikel Arteta told his post-match press conference.

"We went 1-0 at half time and obviously that’s the moment to grab that and use that moment to control the game and use that to go even more than one goal and try to kill the game.

"When we had four opportunities – one with Eddie, two with Martin and one with Auba – we didn’t do it. Then out of nothing we concede the first goal out of a throw in that we had. So very disappointed."

Adding some bit to his attack will no doubt be a priority for both Arteta and director of football Edu in the January and summer transfer windows.

One name who has been linked with a move to the Emirates in the past is versatile RB Leipzig man Dominik Szoboszlai.

The 21-year-old has three goals and four assists in the Bundesliga to his name so far and has been deployed as an attacking midfielder and also on both left and right wings.

On Tuesday night he once again showed his prowess in front of goal as he galloped through the heart of Manchester City's defence before rounding Zach Steffen and slotting home a Champions League goal.

Cool. Calm. Collected. Three attributes Arsenal have badly lacked in attack this season. It should offer food for thought that making a move for a man who has learned from, and remains friends with, Erling Haaland may help solve those attacking frustrations.

"When Erling joined he was the only new player that summer and everybody else knew each other," he said in an interview with the Bundesliga website in October.

"I thought to myself that I had been in the same situation, so I was very open to him and helped him with whatever he needed. We went out together, even though he doesn't do that much and we also went for food and so on.

"We became good friends and I helped him get to know the team while he helped me with my English, so we both helped each other."

However, with Szoboszlai only making the move to Leipzig in January 2021, and with just under five years remaining on his contract, any offer would have to be a sizeable one.
