Mikel Arteta can complete the Arsene Wenger transfer mission as Xavi's Barcelona make £81m call

Raheem Sterling has constantly been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the years, but it now seems more likely for the transfer to happen than ever before.

The England international has still yet to renew his contract at City, as he has made intentions clear to leave the club.

He has recently been linked with a move to Barcelona, but the Express are claiming that the Catalan club have pulled out of the race to sign him, giving Arsenal a clear run at the transfer.

There will be added motivation for the Gunners’ to sign him as Arsene Wenger had attempted to on many occasions.

Speaking about a potential deal for the winger in 2015, Wenger said: “We had many players on the flanks, but Sterling was at QPR - that’s where we should take the players." He said.

"We watched him but you miss obvious players. The history of every club is full of top players that you missed. At the time Liverpool were quicker.”

Sterling has scored 115 goals and 88 assists during his six-year career at Manchester City and has played an important in their most recent Premier League title wins.

He would definitely improve the Arsenal squad, and Arteta is more than familiar with the 26-year-old, as he used to coach him during his time as an employee of Manchester City.

This is also boosted by the fact that the Spaniard is determined to get Wenger back into the Arsenal set up, which he confirmed during the former boss’ film premiere, as he said: “I would like to recover a lot of things that he did and I would like him to be more present at the club.

I think the players would love him, they will benefit, they will be inspired to have him around and I think for the club it would be a huge boost.”

Wenger’s presence at the club could highlight Arteta’s intentions to continue the Frenchman’s transfer legacy, which Sterling was a part of.

And with Barcelona’s exit from the race, it will give the Gunners more of an incentive to push through with the deal, due to the lack of competition.
