Mikel Arteta breaks silence after Gabriel Martinelli signs new long-term Arsenal contract

Arsenal have confirmed that Gabriel Martinelli has signed a new long-term contract.

Since joining from Ituano FC last summer, the teenage striker has netted an impressive 10 goals from just 15 starts in all competitions.

His performances have seen him linked with numerous clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool.

But Arsenal have moved to reward the 19-year-old for his growing importance in Arteta's long-term plans with a new deal.

football.london understands that the Brazilian has put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract with an option to extend.

"I am very happy that Gabi has signed a new contract with us," Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta told the club website.

"He is a very talented young player and he has impressed us with his performances, attitude and work-rate. We are looking forward to getting him back to full fitness and to watching his development at our club."

In a statement, the Gunners added: "Everyone at Arsenal would like to congratulate Gabi on his new contract."

Martinelli will miss the rest of the season for Arsenal after suffering an injury in training.

The Arsenal striker sustained cartilage injury to his left knee during a training session at London Colney last month, and has undergone surgery.
