Mikel Arteta blocks transfer as Arsenal make decision amid Aston Villa and West Ham interest

Emile Smith Rowe is set to stay at Arsenal after being told he is part of Mikel Arteta's plans, according to recent reports.

Smith Rowe endured a difficult 2022/23 campaign, missing over three months of action after undergoing surgery on a long-term groin issue before he suffered a thigh strain just as he was returning to full fitness. Even when fully fit, the Hale End academy graduate struggled to make a meaningful impression on the pitch, playing less than 200 minutes across all competitions.

That had led to some speculation regarding his future in north London but the Daily Mail have now claimed that the 22-year-old has been told he is a part of the Gunners' plans for the 2023/24 season. West Ham United, Brighton and Aston Villa are all said to be interested in the talented playmaker but it seems that he will be plying his trade at the Emirates Stadium next term.

Smith Rowe enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 campaign under Arteta's stewardship, netting ten Premier League goals as he consistently showed his knack for arriving in the box and finishing difficult opportunities. But the form of left-winger Gabriel Martinelli meant the England international has been reduced to substitute appearances, occasionally cameos in more central areas.

When asked about Smith Rowe's lack of game time back in April, Arteta remained coy, urging the young attacking midfielder to continue working hard in training. "He’s pushing, and in football what you did a year ago, a month ago is not important,” said the Spaniard.
