Mikel Arteta and Edu told Arsenal's January transfer priority and it's not a striker

Former Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna has told technical director Edu to sign a centre-back in January.

The Gunners have been on a fantastic run in recent weeks, avoiding defeat in each of their last 10 outings, whilst also shoring up in defence - conceding just four goals in their last eight Premier League matches.

Summers signings Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all settled in well to help Mikel Arteta's side become solid at the back and Sagna has urged the north Londoners to add depth in the New Year.

Speaking exclusively to football.london , via freebets.com, he said: "The team is quite complete at the minute.

"If anything, they'll need a centre-back. It's not as if they're not performing and whilst White and Gabriel look solid there and Tomiyasu is fantastic, they have to stay injury-free.

"So, a centre-back for cover to ensure you don't concede is what you'll need to push on. They've got (Bukayo) Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Auba(meyang) to create and score chances."

The former French international also claimed that his old side can get a result on Saturday evening as they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool.

"The match against Liverpool is a huge test for Arsenal", he added.

"Win that and it will send a statement that Arsenal can be competitive. I believe they can get a result against Liverpool and give them problems - but only if they keep playing like they have been recently, with the same runs and same focus."

Jurgen Klopp's side lost their last game, a 3-2 defeat to West Ham United, leaving them just two points ahead of Arsenal heading into this weekend's highly-anticipated clash.
