Mikel Arteta and Edu had 'absolute consensus' over only one of Arsenal's six transfers

It's been a busy summer for Arsenal in the transfer market after the club forked out almost £160million on a total of six new players.

The Gunners were pretty quick off the mark to bring in full-back Nuno Tavares, before promising midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga followed from Anderlecht.

Then Ben White arrived from Brighton in a blockbuster deal worth £50million, becoming Arsenal's third-highest signing of all time.

After months of speculation, Martin Odegaard's return was finally sealed on a permanent basis, while Aaron Ramsdale was next through the door after Arsenal managed to strike an agreement with Sheffield United.

And then the summer spree was completed with a deadline day swoop for Takehiro Tomayasi from Bologna.

But despite all the work behind the scenes of the club's technical director Edu, it seems he and Arteta only had 'absolute consensus' on just one of those transfers.

Much has been made of Arsenal's failures in the transfer market in recent times, with the departure of flop Willian sanctioned just last week.

The Brazilian agreed to mutually terminate his contract two years early after both Edu and Arteta had told his agent, Kia Joorabchian, they felt the move was 'not going well'.

Joorabchian then claimed it was Arteta who had pushed for Willian's signature and saw him as a key part in their project moving forward.

Things certainly didn't pan out that way, which may concern Arsenal fans when they consider that Arteta and Edu were again not completely in sync over the summer.

According to The Athletic, it was only Odegaard's signing that the pair were in absolute agreement on.

That's hardly unsurprising, given both had seen the Norwegian midfielder at close quarters during his loan spell last season.

In the cases of Tavares and Lokonga - two of the lesser known signings - these both came from Edu and his scouting team, who felt they would be solid additions to Arteta's squad.

It's interesting to note that Lokonga was playing under Arteta's former Manchester City colleague Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht, though the decision to sign him very much came from Edu's side of the table.

Those deals do seem to have paid off, with Arteta particularly impressed with Tavares - a 21-year-old full-back acquired for the modest sum of £6million.

Yet those transfers were the two least expensive of Arsenal's acquisitions, and Arteta appeared to take a more definitive view on the targets he was most keen on.

There was a clear discrepancy between him and Edu in the pursuit of Ramsdale, who Sheffield United were demanding a hefty figure for.

Edu was trying to persuade Arteta that Arsenal would be better off bringing in a cheaper alternative, given it would only be as a back-up to Bernd Leno, with Barcelona stopper Neto put forward for consideration.

However, Arteta was insistent that Ramsdale was the man he wanted - supported by valued opinions from his coaching team.

It still seems difficult to comprehend Arsenal's decision to commit to a £30m transfer for a reserve goalkeeper when other areas of their first XI could arguably do with investment.

Arteta had already brought in two new centre-backs since his appointment - Gabriel and Pablo Mari - but was adamant he wanted to sign more defenders.

There was little opposition to buying both White and Tomiyasu, though again the final call rested with Arteta, and the club's ownership were prepared to sanction the deals purely on the Spaniard's persuasion that they would justify their fees.

It seems Tomiyasu may well be used in the centre as well as at right full-back, and that could prove useful if Arteta's switches to a back three.

Nevertheless, for now at least the jury is out on all of his signings, and pressure is on for them to pay off.
