Mikel Arteta and Edu could be set to miss out on Arsenal transfer target as Napoli make decision

Arsenal's goalkeeping situation has been a hot topic in recent weeks.

Aaron Ramsdale came into the side for the Gunners ' 1-0 win over Norwich City earlier this month, with Bernd Leno the man to lose his position in the line-up.

Ramsdale, who was signed in the summer transfer window for around £25million, had been the back-up to Leno in the opening weeks of his Arsenal career, but has now started the last two Premier League games and has kept two clean sheets along the way.

Leno, meanwhile, faces an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium, with the Germany international seeing his contract in north London coming to an end in less than two years' time.

According to a report from Eurosport, the 29-year-old has been made available for other clubs in the January transfer window, as the side move on to the 'next phase of their squad overhaul in 2022'.

A return to his homeland of Germany is said to be the most likely option for Leno, despite reported interest from Inter Milan.

One man who was tipped to replace Leno over the summer, prior to Ramsdale signing, was Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Gunners were understood to be interested in Onana, but his doping ban caused quite a few issues in negotiations, so they moved on to Ramsdale.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper is now into the final year of his deal with the Dutch club and is able to speak to foreign clubs over signing a pre-contract agreement in the January transfer window.

The Cameroon international is well regarded around Europe and if he does become available, it might be too good for some of the continent's top clubs to turn down.

Now, Napoli are interested in signing Onana, according to a report from Italian news outlet Calciomercato, and could look to swoop in for him before any other competition arrives, but there are apparently other clubs watching his situation.

Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that Barcelona are closely monitoring developments at Ajax and could look to make a move for his services.

Earlier this year, Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars spoke about Onana's future: "You can never say never in football [about him renewing his contract], but at the moment I do not see that he extends his contract with us.

"We have been very clear. We have spent a lot of time negotiating to extend his contract, but it did not work.

"We then gave him the space to move during the summer and it did not work either. He can leave in January, otherwise he will leave for free next June."
