Mikel Arteta and Arsenal told to learn important lesson from Liverpool struggles

Nigel Winterburn believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta must learn from Liverpool's example in order to find "consistency" at the Emirates.

The former defender, who made 440 appearances for the Gunners, believes the confidence Jurgen Klopp instilled among his squad in order to claim the biggest prizes in world football is something Arsenal need - placing greater importance on that over anything else, including player ability.

Arteta's side currently sit 10th in the Premier League, 10 points behind Chelsea in fourth and five points behind the Reds in sixth but with a game in hand.

"A lot of making that next step is confidence," Winterburn said.

"It doesn't matter what type of player you bring into your football club. We are seeing that with Liverpool this season.

"Yes, they've had some injuries, but they've got a very, very strong squad, but they are struggling with lack of form and I think people don't realise how that can affect your performances."

Liverpool and Arsenal have both struggled for form this season, with the Reds facing a real fight to finish in the premier European finishing spots while the Gunners face a battle to compete on the continent next term too.

And Winterburn says that consistency and confidence will be key for the Gunners if they are to be finishing among the Champions League spots next year.

"They're going to have to play with a lot more consistency than they have done to get back in to the top four," Winterburn told freesupertips.com

"They started the season okay, then they had a dreadful run. I think if you're challenging the top four, you can be off the boil for a couple of games, but then you've got to be right back up there winning them."
