Mikel Arteta and Arsenal set for more pain in Boxing Day clash with Chelsea

In an intriguing quirk of the fixture list, Arsenal vs Chelsea has been one of the most played fixtures across the festive period in recent times.

In the past decade the two have played each other four times around Christmas, with some mixed results.

Despite hosting all of these contests, the Gunners have won just once, but the matches have tended to always be good games.

Of course, the fact they've face one another so frequently at this time is nothing other than pure coincidence, but with the two clashing once more this Boxing Day, let's take a trip down memory lane to see how the fixture has played out.

Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea, 27th December 2010

Arsenal's only victory over the festive period against Chelsea came all the way back in 2010.

A team featuring players like Bacary Sagna, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie, underlined their title credentials in style through goals from Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott.

This was a Chelsea side featuring current manager Frank Lampard who had just won the league themselves under Carlo Ancelotti the season before.

It proved to be something of a false dawn for the Gunners though. They tailed off dramatically towards the end of the campaign winning just two of their final 11 games to end up finishing fourth. What the current Arsenal squad would do for such a luxury now!

Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea, December 23rd

The returning Jose Mourinho's tactics ensured that soaking night in North London ended up 0-0.

Arsenal had 61% of the possession but simply couldn't break down the Portuguese manager's 'little horses' who would go on to win the Premier League the following season.

The result meant Arsenal failed to claim top spot going into Christmas, falling behind Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool on goal difference.

Both Mikel Arteta and Frank Lampard were on the pitch for the game, while Willian and David Luiz also featured for the Blues with Petr Cech was also playing in the opposition goal. However, the creative wizardry of Santi Cazorla was deemed only fit enough for the bench. Again the Gunners' title ambitions floundered after this result, leaving them to finish a 'disappointing' fourth come the end of the campaign.

Arsenal 2-2 Chelsea, January 3rd 2018

This was to be Arsene Wenger's last Premier League clash against the Blues and it was a belter. Both sides through caution to the wind in a game that could easily have gone either way.

Having taken the lead through a Jack Wilshere thunderbolt, Arsenal looked to have lost it when Marcos Alonso put Chelsea in front in the 84th minute, only for Hector Bellerin to salvage a point in the dying moments.

There was still time though for Alvaro Morata to miss a complete sitter - his third of the night - as the Gunners pushed on for a late winner.

Neither side qualified for the Champions League that year which is probably a showing of how the quality on display was the worst of any of these fixtures. In terms of entertainment though, this one was by far the best.

Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea, 29th December

Mikel Arteta's first home game in charge of Arsenal may have ended in defeat there were plenty of positives to take.

The Gunners had taken the lead in the first half through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, only to tire drastically in the second and concede two goals in the final ten minutes.

After months of looking disinterested under Unai Emery, an Arsenal side clearly reinvigorated by their new manager bounce left everything on the Emirates pitch and were greeted with a standing ovation at full time.

The game may have ended in defeat, but Mikel Arteta would kill for a performance like the one witnessed just under a year ago to help relieve some of the intense pressure on him.
