Mikel Arteta and Arsenal handed transfer boost in search for Emi Buendia alternative

Arsenal target Hakan Calhanoglu looks set to leave AC Milan this summer as the Rossoneri 'will not budge' on new contract.

Calhanoglu enjoyed a terrific campaign in Milan, topping Serie A for a number of chance creating statistics - including the likes of key passes and shot-creating actions as his side finished second in the league.

The Turkish international could be available on a free transfer this summer, with his contract set to expire at the end of the month as Milan are unwilling to match his wage demands, according to Milan News.

The report claims that the terms offered by Milan have been deemed 'unsatisfactory' and that the two parties are looking increasingly unlikely to reach an agreement that would see Calhanoglu stay with the club.

As such, this could be the perfect opportunity for Arsenal to solve their attacking midfield problem, while also not having to spend a penny on a transfer fee.

football.london understands that Arsenal are in the hunt for an attacking midfielder to help ease the creative burden on the likes of Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

Mikel Arteta's men have a long-standing interest in Norwich's Emi Buendia but football.london understands that the Argentine is close to sealing a move to Aston Villa instead in what will be a major blow to the Gunners.

With Buendia seemingly out of reach Arsenal technical director, Edu Gaspar may turn his attention to Calhanoglu instead.

The tricky playmaker is represented by the same agent as Bosnian fullback Sead Kolasinac, meaning the Gunners already have some sort of contact with his agency.

However, the odds may be stacked against Arsenal as they won't play in Europe next season, making Arteta's project less appealing to a top talent like Calhanoglu.

This could be a problem encountered by Arteta and the Gunners this summer, with Arsenal facing the reality of no European football for the first time in a quarter of a century.
