Mikel Arteta admits concern over Emile Smith Rowe injury after Arsenal beat Leicester

Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the injury Emile Smith Rowe picked up during Arsenal's Premier League clash.

The 20-year-old went down under no pressure immediately after David Luiz scored the Gunners' equaliser at the King Power Stadium and had to be replaced by Martin Odegaard.

Smith Rowe missed most of the first part of the season due to a series of injuries, but has been integral to the side since breaking into the first team after the Boxing Day victory against Chelsea.

And now Arteta has admitted he is concerned about the nature of the youngster's injury, and revealed that he could be out for a while.

"Yeah, I am concerned because for Emile to come out and say I cannot continue playing it should be something," he said when asked about the severity of the problem in his post match press conference.

"It was something related to his hip. But yeah he was in a good place after the game."

Smith Rowe missed nearly a year of football in 2019 after sustaining a hip injury just before his loan move to RB Leipzig.

Having recovered from that he also missed three months at the beginning of this season with a dislocated shoulder.

Since coming back into the side the youngster has been a key part of Mikel Arteta's side's revival in the Premier League providing four assists in just 11 starts.

Arteta rotated his side heavily, making six changes in an attempt to keep his players as fresh as possible but Smith Rowe still picked up a problem.

He was one of three players who had to come off injured in the match as Harvey Barnes and Jonny Evans also limped off for Leicester with separate injuries.

The Arsenal manager went on to add that this was to be expected given the extraordinary demands being placed on players with a heavier fixture list than normal this season.

"I think it’s absolutely normal that it’s happening," he said. "That’s why we needed to change players, because if not we were going to risk our players to get injured.

"But sometimes you don’t have a chance as a manager because you don’t have enough players or you have a necessity to win so you play them again.

"But it’s insane the amount of minutes these players are saying without a pre-season without a break you’re going to get injured it’s going to happen.

"We talked about it, all the managers raised their voice at the start of the season and it’s happening."
