Mikel Arteta addresses Arsenal January transfer rumours as Gunners eye additions

Mikel Arteta is hopeful of making additions to his Arsenal squad before next week's deadline.

The Gunners are keen to bring in defensive reinforcements this month after losing Calum Chambers until the end of the season.

Arsenal have also been tipped to make a move for Shakhtar centre-back Mykola Matviyenko but would prefer a loan deal rather than a permanent switch.

Speaking ahead of his side's FA Cup clash with Bournemouth, Arteta said: "We’ve been looking at different positions, since I joined we lost Calum and we had circumstances and injuries in those positions, so it’s true that at the back we have been short.

“But there are other positions depending on what happens in the market that we might need to assess.”

Arsenal have also been linked with fresh interest in Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar but Arteta is keeping his cards close to his chest.

“I’m not going to be discussing any transfer links publicly, that’s something we’re trying to do internally and when we have news we will communicate with you,” he said.

“At the moment I am 50/50 because this window is complicated, I only want to bring someone in if I am really convinced he can improve the level that we have.”

Arteta also discussed Dani Ceballos' future with the Spaniard reportedly keen to cut short his loan in north London.

He added: "I have had conversations with Dani. He was in Madrid doing his rehab when I arrived here.

"I haven't seen much of him because he has only trained with us for a week to 10 days.

"It is very early to assess what I can do or not with him. I have seen those rumours but I have nothing to comment."
