Mike Zimmer talks about Vikings rookie QB Kellen Mond

Kellen Mond made his first appearance in an NFL game today, albeit a preseason matchup. Mond’s stats don’t jump out, so people who missed the game may not have noticed his impact.

Mond led some nice drives. He made some nice plays on scrambles. His performance wasn’t always pretty from a technique standpoint, but he showed flashes of promise.

Mike Zimmer talked about the performance with reporters recently:

“He was OK,” Zimmer said of the quarterback, per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. “I didn’t like when tried to shovel pass the ball to whoever it was on the one third down play. He used his legs a couple times. He just has to get moving a little bit quicker. Everything is in slow motion with him and he’s going to have to improve that”

To be fair, Zimmer didn’t seem to be too positive on the team as a whole. And amid Mond’s positive COVID-19 test earlier this offseason, the rookie has not had the optimal amount of time in training camp to adjust to the NFL. The preseason should make for good practice. Maybe he’ll end up dialing back the shovel passes, even.
