Mike Zimmer is pretty hard on himself for 4th quarter gamble vs. Redskins

The Vikings made a curious decision in Thursday night’s win over the Redskins.

On 4th-and-1 from their own 34-yard line, the Vikings decided to try a quarterback sneak instead of punting it to the Redskins. The Vikings were up 16-9 at the time. Even if Kirk Cousins had gotten the first down, the Vikings weren’t guaranteed any points. And if Cousins didn’t get it, which he didn’t, it would immediately put the Redskins in scoring position.

“Honestly, it was a misexecuted play but it was probably the dumbest decision I’ve made since I’ve been here,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said on Friday via the Pioneer Press.

It all worked out. Two plays later, Vikings safety Anthony Harris intercepted Dwayne Haskins. The Vikings would go on to get a Dan Bailey field goal on that drive.

Even in his sixth season as a head coach, Zimmer is still learning. It’s actually commendable that he’s willing to admit it.
