Mike Zimmer explaining Kaare Vedvik trade is classic Zimmer

The Vikings stole the day on Sunday, trading a fifth-round pick for kicker/punter Kaare Vedvik.

It’s not a move that came completely out of nowhere. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he was alerted right before his Sunday press conference.

“We’d been in contact with them for a little bit, quite a few other teams were trying to get him and so we just decided to pull the trigger. None of this came about until really yesterday,” Zimmer said Monday. “The first I heard about it was, I know I said I didn’t know anything about it at the press conference, but I was supposed to keep it hush-hush. Good with that, right? I didn’t really know anything about it until that morning. I didn’t even know there was a possibility that morning and then right before I came down here to the press conference they said it’s done but keep it hush-hush, so just being a good soldier.”

Zimmer is a national treasure with quotes like this.

The question is now what role will Vedvik play with the team. The Vikings still have kicker Dan Bailey and punter Matt Wile on the team. Vedvik seems like a roster lock considering they gave up a fifth-round pick for him. Now, we’ll see what happens with Bailey and Wile. Vedvik could be the kicker, and that would be bad news for Bailey. He could be the punter, which would be bad news for Wile. Or he could be both!

Stay tuned.
