Mike Zimmer expects Kirk Cousins to be better in 2019

On paper, Kirk Cousins had a very good 2018.

Cousins threw for 4,298 yards and a career-high 30 touchdowns.

However, he wasn’t great when the team needed him to be and the Vikings missed out on the playoffs, finishing with an 8-7-1 record.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer expects Cousins to be better in his second year with the Vikings.

“I think he had a good year,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said at the combine in Indianapolis this week. “I think because he signed the big contract, everybody’s on his rear end about that, and we didn’t win enough games. Same with me, I guess, but the big thing is every free agent I’ve had in my 25 or 26 years, however many years I’ve been coaching, they’ve always played better the second year. . . I think he’s going to play great.”

Zimmer’s right. Cousins’ contract makes it hard to ignore some of his struggles — the same struggles that haunted him in Washington.

One thing that would certainly help Cousins: An improved offensive line.
